Key Numbers
- Total gas stations in PH: 14,519
- Temporarily closed: 387 (2.7%)
- Cases filed: 17
- Monitoring period: March 1 - April 9, 2026
What Happened
The PNP, in coordination with the Department of Energy (DOE), has been actively monitoring the fuel supply situation since March 1, 2026. The temporary closures were ordered due to the non-delivery of petroleum products to these stations.
The investigation uncovered several violations including:
- Hoarding - Secretly storing fuel beyond allowable limits
- Profiteering - Selling fuel at excessively high prices
- Oil pilferage - Illegal siphoning or theft of fuel
- Non-delivery - Failure to receive or sell fuel products
17 Cases Filed
The PNP has filed 17 cases against fuel station operators and individuals involved in illegal activities. These cases are in connection with hoarding, profiteering, and other violations related to the ongoing fuel crisis.
Note: This is separate from the oil pilferage case in Laguna where six suspects were arrested in a resort compound recently.
Government Response
The PNP and DOE are working together to:
- Ensure public access to fuel
- Monitor fuel supply distribution
- Investigate illegal activities
- Prevent fuel shortages
- Protect consumers from exploitation
Impact on Motorists
While 387 stations represent only 2.7% of total stations, the closures have contributed to localized fuel shortages in some areas. Motorists have reported difficulties finding fuel, especially in provincial areas.
However, good news is on the way: a diesel rollback is expected next week, which may help ease some of the pressure on consumers.
Looking Ahead
The PNP and DOE continue their monitoring and enforcement efforts. Motorists are advised to report any suspected illegal activities to authorities.
For now, the public is urged to remain patient as the government works to stabilize fuel supply and prices across the country.
